Motorcycle shipping

Bikes ship strapped down in enclosed trailers, on open carriers with wheel chocks, or crated. Carriers need the year, make and model, whether it runs, and whether it's a trike, has a sidecar or has custom parts, since each changes how it is secured.

Where is it going?

What carriers need from you

These are the fields in the motorcycle form. Complete answers let carriers bid on the real job instead of padding for unknowns.

Every post also includes

  • Pickup and delivery addresses with date and time windows
  • Extra stops along the route, if any
  • Up to 5 photos and 5 files, such as spec sheets or floor plans
  • Anything else carriers should know, in your own words

The bike

  • Year, make and model
  • Operable: runs and drives
  • Sidecar attached
  • Trike: three wheels
  • Modified: custom parts or changes from stock

Before pickup

  1. 1

Photograph both sides of the bike and note existing scratches.

  2. 2

Remove saddlebags, GPS units, covers and anything that could come loose.

  3. 3

Run the tank low and check for leaks.

  4. 4

Tell the driver if the battery is weak, and hand over or disable the alarm fob.

  5. 5

Point out custom parts that stick out; they need room when the bike is strapped.

Motorcycle questions

Should I crate my motorcycle?

Crating protects the bike but adds cost and work at both ends. Many riders ship uncrated in an enclosed trailer, strapped to wheel chocks. Ask carriers which they offer.

Can you ship a trike or a bike with a sidecar?

Yes. Mark it in the form; both are wider than a standard bike and need more room on the trailer.

Can I ship a motorcycle that doesn't run?

Yes. Turn off operable and say whether it rolls and the brakes work, so carriers bring the right help to load it.

What about ATVs and dirt bikes?

Dirt bikes ship here. ATVs, UTVs and snowmobiles have their own category with dimension fields that suit them better.
